US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told him that India will stop buying oil from Russia. Trump described the move as a “big step” in efforts to isolate Moscow economically.
India will stop buying Russian oil: Trump’s claim
Donald Trump claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally assured him that his country will stop buying Russian oil. However, this claim has not been confirmed by the Indian Government. “There will be no oil,” Trump said. They are not buying oil.” He said that this change will not happen immediately, but ”in a short time”.
The Indian Embassy office in Washington has not yet responded to a request for comment. Trump is frustrated by his inability to end the war in Ukraine. This war started with the invasion of Russia about four years ago.
He has expressed dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he describes as the biggest obstacle to reconciliation. Trump is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. India is the second largest buyer of Russian oil after China and as a punishment, Trump had increased the duty on India to 50 percent in August.

Before this statement of Trump, he had praised India. US President Donald Trump on Monday praised India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi without naming them, saying, “India is a great country, which is led by my very good friends.” Addressing a conference of world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh city of Egypt after agreeing on a ceasefire to end the nearly two-year-long war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Trump said that he thinks “India and Pakistan work very well together.” Will live well.
Looking at Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif standing behind him, Trump said, “India is a great country and my very good friends are leading it.” He has done a wonderful job. I think Pakistan and India will live very well together.” Earlier, praising Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, Trump invited the Prime Minister of Pakistan to address the gathering. Sharif said that peace has been established in West Asia after the tireless efforts of President Trump.

Till now Trump has been claiming to resolve seven disputes, including the one between India and Pakistan. However, now he has increased this number to eight by adding the Israel-Gaza dispute. Trump had announced on social media on May 10 that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “complete and immediate” ceasefire with US mediation.

The US President repeated his claim dozens of times that he had helped ‘resolve’ the conflict between India and Pakistan. India has consistently maintained that the agreement on ending the conflict with Pakistan was reached after direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two armies.
