US President Donald Trump has said that Pakistan is among the countries which are actively conducting nuclear tests. In an interview to a television channel, Trump claimed that Russia, China, North Korea and Pakistan are continuing nuclear tests. Trump also announced that America will now restart its nuclear testing program. He said that when other countries are doing testing, why should America stop alone. Trump claimed that the US has the largest number of nuclear weapons in the world and has also discussed disarmament efforts with Russia and China.
Let us remind you that recently Trump had announced the resumption of nuclear tests that had been stopped for three decades with “immediate effect”. He described the decision as “appropriate and necessary” in the context of Russia’s advanced nuclear system tests.

If seen, this statement of Donald Trump has once again created a stir in world nuclear politics. The inclusion of Pakistan’s name in this list is not only a matter of concern for South Asia, but also directly affects India’s security equations. If Trump’s claim that Pakistan is conducting “active testing” is true, then it is contrary to the spirit of the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), even though Pakistan is not a signatory to it.
Also, the announcement by the US to restart nuclear testing after 30 years raises a serious question mark on global arms control efforts. Trump’s policy clearly appears to be reviving the old Cold War mentality of “balance-of-power.” His argument that “why should America stop when other countries are testing” is, in a way, an attempt to legitimize nuclear competition.
This scenario presents a dual challenge for India. On one hand, Pakistan’s possible tests and on the other hand, the wider impact of US-Russia-China nuclear competition. It remains to be seen what India’s reaction is to Trump’s statement.
