Veteran filmmaker Chandra Barot died at the age of 86 after a long fight with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Known for the direction of Amitabh Bachchan’s all -time blockbuster film Don (1978), who inspired several remakes and Legacy sequels in various languages, Barot breathed his last at a hospital in Bandra, Mumbai on Sunday.

Barot’s family gave this information. After the announcement of Barot’s death, many Bollywood celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan paid tribute to him. Bachchan described the filmmaker as his “very dear friend”. Bachchan wrote on his blog, “Another sad moment … My dear friend and Don director Chandra Barot died this morning. This damage is difficult to describe in words. We worked together, but he was more family friend than this … I can only pray. ”
According to Barot’s family, he was battling ‘Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis’ (lung disease) for the last 11 years and was being treated at Guru Nanak Hospital. Chandra’s wife Deepa Barot told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “He died due to a heart attack at Guru Nanak Hospital this morning at 6.30 am.” He said that he was suffering from lung disease for the last 11 years.

The funeral of the filmmaker was performed in the presence of family and friends at around four in the evening. Barot also worked as an assistant director of actor-director Manoj Kumar in ‘Purab and Paschim’, ‘Roti Cloth Aur House’, ‘Memorable’ and ‘Shor’. After ‘Don’, Chandra Barot directed the Bengali film ‘Ashrita’ in 1989.
In 2018, on the 40th anniversary of the film ‘Don’, Barot shared a very interesting information in an interview with ‘PTI-Bhasha’. Barot had reported that he had decided to make a film to take out a producer friend Nariman Irani with his friends Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Pran.
He said, “Bawa (Irani) wife was a ‘hairdresser” and the writer knew Salim Khan. We asked him to write a few words for us. When we met Salim, he did not have any script ready, but he told us, ‘There is a subject that no one understands.’
Chandra Barot had recalled, “We said,” We don’t mind, we just want to write ‘Salim-Javed “on the posters.” It was a ready screenplay and we took it immediately. There was no title for this. Everyone in the cine world used to call it ‘Don Wali Script’. “He said that it was sad to die of Irani six months before the release of ‘Don’. Film director Barot has his wife and a son in his family.
Film industry colleagues expressed condolences on social media on Barot’s death. Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar said in the post on Instagram, “It is sad to know that Don’s director is no longer. Chandra Barot ji’s soul should be peaceful. I express deep condolences to the family. ”
Filmmaker Kunal Kohli said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’, “Chandra ji, God give peace to your soul.” Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta thanked Barot for producing the film ‘Don’, which he described one of the most entertaining Hindi films ever.
