Amidst the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday visited Jailorwala Bagh and Wazirpur slums in Ashok Vihar, where several houses were demolished last month. The Congress leader inspected the slums and spoke to the people who shared their problems of being homeless. Gandhi assured him that the Congress is with him and will take his fight to the court. He also assured people to raise this issue in Parliament.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on June 16 launched a sabotage campaign to remove illegal structure on government land under the anti -encroachment campaign in Jailorwala Bagh and Wazirpur slums in Ashok Vihar area. About 200 houses were demolished during this campaign, causing many people to become homeless. Both Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee are continuously targeting the BJP for these sabotage campaigns.

According to the DDA, the campaign was focused on the houses of Jailorwala Bagh, where the residents had already been allotted alternative flats under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and were vandalized to evacuate the land near the railway line in Wazirpur. 1675 flats were built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, out of which 985 flats were allocated. The rest of the people did not get the flats and some people even took a stay order from the High Court for vacating the land.
