On the issue of Rahul Gandhi, the opposition is preparing to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that 19 opposition parties are with the Congress. In its plan to mobilize opposition parties after Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha, the Congress plans to hold talks with opposition parties to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Sources said that this proposal was put forward in the meeting of Congress MPs. On Monday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called a meeting of opposition leaders. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday said 19 opposition parties, including Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, are with the Congress, which has announced a month-long program to ‘save democracy’.

Opposition gets issue from Rahul’s episode

Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in the 2019 defamation case brought together opposition parties as non-Congress parties termed the conviction as ‘politically motivated’. Soon after the conviction, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha, which strengthened the opposition unit, although the Congress said there was no talk of contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as the primary objective was to ‘save democracy’.

Congress may bring no-confidence motion on Monday

The Congress on Tuesday announced a month-long protest program across the country, which will begin with a ‘Save Democracy’ peace march in Delhi on Tuesday. In the later phase of the protest, national level leaders of the opposition parties will be invited. While the Congress has laid out this plan at the grassroots level, the party wants to bring a no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker next Monday on charges of favoritism in the House.
