Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Monday that his government would urge the Supreme Court to allow the use of certified green firecrackers during Diwali. He said that the government will present its side before the court in writing and request permission to use all official guidelines and environmental norms to be allowed to use environmentally safe firecrackers. CM Gupta said that the purpose of this proposal is to balance between public sentiments and environmental protection, to ensure that the festivals are blissful and responsible. He said that Diwali is the most important festival of India’s cultural and religious heritage. Keeping in mind the sentiments of crores of Delhiites, our government will appeal to the Supreme Court to allow the use of green firecrackers during festivals.

The Chief Minister assured full cooperation in the implementation of any directive issued by the Supreme Court and the Chief Minister reiterated the commitment of the Delhi government to curb pollution and environmental protection. He further stated that if the court allows, only certified green firecrackers, which are approved by authorized institutions and approved by competent authorities, will be allowed. He further said that the government is committed to promoting environment-friendly celebrations, ensuring adherence to public safety norms.

Earlier on Sunday, an official said that Delhi Police seized more than 1,700 kg of banned crackers in several campaigns in the national capital before Diwali this month and arrested seven people. Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Kumar said that the crime branch of Delhi Police took this action in Dwarka, Rohini, Uttam Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Mukundpur and Shahdara. He said that these campaigns were conducted as per the recent instructions of the Supreme Court to curb the storage and sale of firecrackers to deal with air pollution and ensure public safety. Delhi’s air quality is bad since October and the whole winter is bad.
