The Supreme Court on Thursday took a tough stand on illegal cutting of trees in the Kancha Gachibovali forest near Hyderabad University and said that the work seems already planned.
The court warned the Telangana government that if the forest is not re -prepared, then the officials of the Telangana government can go to jail.
During the hearing in the case, a bench of CJI BR Gawai and Justice Augustin George Christ said that the cutting of trees was done at a time when the court was on a 3 -day leave, so that no one could stop.
In this case, the Supreme Court took automatic cognizance on 3 April and ordered that the status quo should be maintained in the forest area and there should be no new work. Despite this, trees were harvested, which is a violation of the order.
On behalf of the Telangana government, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that no activity is happening there and the government will fully follow the court orders. The next hearing in the case will be held on 23 July.

April 16: SC reprimands Telangana government
The Supreme Court reprimanded the Telangana government on 16 April. The court directed that if she wants her Chief Secretary to be saved from any serious action, then she brought a plan to make 100 acres of forest land as before.
Questioning the Congress government’s haste to cut trees, a bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Christ also said that it would not back down from going to ‘Out of De Way’ to protect the environment. The bench also said that not a single tree should be cut on this land in Kancha Gachibovali Forest Area.
Justice Gawai told the Telangana government advocate Abhishek Singhvi that instead of justifying your action, it would be better for you to make a plan about how you will restore that 100 acres of land. Otherwise we do not know how many of your officers will have to go to the temporary jail to be built at the same place.
The Supreme Court asked- what was the hurry to do so?
During the hearing, Justice Gawai asked, “What was the hurry to do so in three days of the holidays? We are only worried about how a large number of trees were dropped without the permission of the competent authority. How the bulldozers were used. If you wanted to build, you should have followed the procedure, the permission should have been taken.
The bench said- We are only worried about the environmental damage. The bench gave the Telangana government four weeks to file its reply on the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) report and set the next hearing of the case on 15 May. Also said that in the meantime, not a single tree will be cut there.

The old forest spread over 400 acres was being destroyed for the IT park being built on the University of Hyderabad University. On March 30, there was a lot of uproar between the students and the police opposing the creation of IT Park.
Students were opposing the project due to environmental concerns. Dozens of bulldozers were brought in the presence of police to clean the land. During this, there was a sharp clash between the students and the police.
On April 2, the Supreme Court took cognizance of the harvesting of trees on 400 acres of land near the university. The court also directed the Telangana High Court Registrar to visit the site and present the report.
