Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s new movie Costao recently released. The film is based on the true story of Custom Officer Costao Fernandes of Goa. Released on Zee5, the film is directed by Sejal Shah. The film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Priya Bapat, Hussain Dalal and Mahika Sharma. Why was Costao’s character so special?
Characters like Costao have become very important in today’s era. Now ideal personalities are not coming up in our society, who can inspire our children. There is a lot of garbage on social media and children are being affected by it. In such a situation, when a character like Costao comes out, which is brave, is true, fought with the system, it seems that every child should see this story. So that the coming generations get true heroes.
You drown in every character. How did you mold yourself in the role of Costao in this film?
Every character is a means for me to cleanse the soul. In real life, we all lie somewhere, make compromises, but when I get a chance to play a true character in front of the camera, it seems that let me at least tell the truth on the screen. This character takes me out of my regrets.
Do you think that today’s children need real heroes like Costa?
In today’s time, we have to search for such people who can become ideal for us. We have to show such role models especially to children. Today there is a lot of garbage on social media and children are being affected by it. Yes, there are also good things, but they are rarely shown. In such a situation, we should bring out the stories of brave, honest and true people who stand against the system, who dare to tell the truth. If we are able to reach such characters to children, then perhaps we can improve their lives.
What was the most difficult part of the film for you?
The most difficult part for me was the same climax scene. If I had tried to act too much in it, I would have been caught. In that scene, my character is confessing to the gilt in his inner gilt. So I think it was the most difficult scene for me as an actor. When we do such scenes, we often miss our real life. At that time, the whole life becomes reward in two seconds. Then you remember something that has really happened to us and when we do a scene by connecting with real life, then the truth comes in it automatically.
Thankfully, there have been many experiences in my life. Walked from a small village to big cities, met thousands of people, saw many incidents. When I do a scene, there is no film in my mind, but people of my real life are remembered. Perhaps this is why that scene starts to look even more true.
Should such stories also come on screen, in which the lives of common but highly dedicated people should be shown?
No film was made on the Custom Department so far, but now this is the first film based on the custom officer. Through the film, we want to say thanks to an officer like Costao Fernandes. He always put his duty first, which is very commendable.
Usually biopic is made on famous celebrities, but in this film we are telling the story of a person whom very few people knew. Despite doing such a renunciation job, he did not know many people besides the Custom Department and some people of Goa, but today it is a proud moment for us. Actually, his suffering, his honesty, he had to bear for some time, but it cannot go in vain and finally the truth definitely gets its fruit, but it is right, but it is definitely found. It is very happy for us.

Costao Fernandes ji’s daughter gave me a very good completion. She was very happy. I liked him even more because Costa was living separately from his family for a long time. Now his family is proud of him. Maybe after this film, his family will be united again. If this happens, nothing can be a bigger thing for us.
You have become a little choosy about the film, why?
I am at this stage of life, where things have to be done with a little thought. Some one or two mistakes are made, so now I want to do a little less work, but whatever work I do, I should do it thoughtfully. I want to do the work in which I feel that yes, I have corrected after doing this work. Just want to do the same thing.
