Veteran actor and founder of Makkal Nidhi Mayyam (MNM) Kamal Haasan said on Friday (May 30, 2025) that he would not apologize for his comment on Kannada language, which has led to a dispute in Karnataka. During the audio launch of the thug life directed by Mani Ratnam in Chennai, the actor said that “Tamil gave birth to Kannada.” The comment was criticized by the people of Karnataka, and pro -Kannada organizations protested against him, accusing him of “hurting the feelings of the Kannada people”. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has threatened that if Mr. Haasan does not apologize, he will ban the release of a multilingual film in Karnataka. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on 5 June.

Karnataka minister Shivraj Tangdagi on Friday warned that if actor Kamal Haasan does not apologize for his comment about Kannada, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) will impose “ban” on his films in the state as per the decision of the Film of Commerce (KFCC). Meanwhile, KFCC President M Narasimhlu said that exhibitions and distributors voluntarily decided that if Hassan does not apologize, they will not release their film.

The film ‘Thug Life’ will not be allowed to be released
The KFCC on Thursday said that it would not allow Haasan’s film ‘Thug Life’ to be released in Karnataka until he publicly apologizes till May 30 for his controversial remarks about Kannada. During the promotional program of his upcoming film by actor-leader Hassan, he had recently allegedly reported that “Kannada was born from Tamil” on which the pro-Kannada groups and cultural organizations had expressed displeasure and widespread outrage.

Tangdagi said, “I have written a letter.After that, the film Chamber of Commerce has also taken a good decision and held a press conference yesterday that his film will be banned if he does not apologize in two days. I congratulate the Film Chamber of Commerce as Kannada and Culture Minister. ”
He said, “If he does not apologize, we will not allow it.” They should apologize. No mild comments against Kannada will be tolerated. If he does not apologize, we will take our decision. “Asked if his films were not banned, Tangdagi replied, ‘Yes’. At the same time, Haasan issued a statement on Friday, refusing to apologize once again, saying that he believes in law and justice and his love for Karnataka is true.
