Conspiracy to suppress the voice of Balochistan: Demand for intervention from UN on the imprisonment of Mehrang Baloch

Suppression of peaceful Baloch voices has intensified in Pakistan. Sabiha Baloch, senior leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), condemned the continued imprisonment of Mehrang Baloch and other activists, calling it a blatant act of political vendetta. Sabiha said the detained leaders have been held unlawfully for more than six months, stripped of their basic rights and deprived of a fair judicial process, The Balochistan Post reported.

According to The Balochistan Post, Sabiha said that the only “crime” committed by Mehrang Baloch and his associates was to hold a peaceful protest against enforced disappearances and systematic violence in Balochistan. He further said that his arrest was part of a deliberate attempt by the Pakistani government to suppress dissent and demands for justice. Dr. Sabiha condemned Pakistan’s disregard for its international commitments and said arbitrary detentions violate the fundamental principles of justice enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. He argued that such actions highlight the government’s fear of accountability and its ongoing campaign to crush legitimate political movements in the province.
Dr. Sabiha also expressed serious concern over the conduct of court hearings within the prison walls, saying that this practice undermines transparency and judicial independence. He accused officials of manipulating the legal system through pressure and intimidation and of making the courts an instrument of political control rather than an instrument of justice. Highlighting the resilience of her detained colleagues, Sabiha described Dr. Mehrang Baloch and other BYC members as “voices of truth and courage” who represent the conscience of Balochistan. He said his prolonged imprisonment is not only a symbol of legal injustice but also the moral degradation of the state, as highlighted by The Balochistan Post.

He warned that silence would lead to more oppression in Balochistan, the Balochistan Post reported.
