The Commonwealth’s Independent Election Supervisor Group has expressed serious concerns about Pakistan’s 2024 general elections and cited several factors that weaken the credibility, transparency and inclusion of the electoral process. A major issue was raised that Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) refused to allot the election symbol of the Cricket Bat Party, which had a profound impact on the party’s ability to contest the fair election.

The 13 -member Commonwealth Supervisor Group (COG) headed by former Nigeria President Gudlaq Jonathan was invited by the Election Commission of Pakistan to monitor elections. In its final report, the group pointed to many situations that seemed to limit fundamental political rights and directly affect PTI’s election campaign efforts. Conflicts also included the closure of mobile services on election night, affecting transparency and delay in timely reporting of results.

Jonathan said that the pre-election factors, especially PTI election symbol and forcibly registration of its candidates as independents, disrupted the process of providing equal opportunities. Jonathan said that we expressed concern over several factors during the election period, which significantly influenced the process of providing equal opportunities, the most important PTI was to not allocate the election symbol of the bat and register PTI candidates as an independent.
