The earthquake caused more than 200 prisoners from Karachi’s high -security Malir Jail to escape, some of whom are staunch criminals on the night of June 2. At least 216 prisoners escaped in the incident of fleeing from jail in Pakistan, killing one prisoner and injuring several others in the shootout. During the incident, three personnel of the Frontier Corps (FC) and a prison guard also suffered serious injuries, which led to a prison struggle area. In response, Karachi has been kept on high alert.

As a precaution, the prisoners were temporarily taken out of their barracks, causing 700 to 1,000 prisoners to gather near the main gate. Amidst the chaos, more than 100 prisoners, many of whom have serious criminal charges, forcibly opened the gate and escaped. During this scuffle, the prisoners snatched the weapons, fired bullets at the authorities and exposed the significant flaws in the security and emergency preparations of the jail. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar clarified that the prisoners broke the main gate, not the wall of the jail, as stated initially. He admitted that the earthquake caused cracks in the wall, but it was not used to escape.
Prisoners were seen roaming on the streets of Karachi
Soon after fleeing from jail, several videos went viral on social media, in which many prisoners were seen walking on the streets of Karachi and some were openly shouting that they were jailed for 28 years. All this happened when the police ran to search, causing common people to panic.
Search operations started, 75 prisoners caught
In response, security forces, including Rangers, Police and FC, launched a comprehensive search operation. By Tuesday morning, 75 prisoners were caught, efforts are on to locate the remaining fugitives. Outposts were established across the city, traffic was banned near the National Highway and monitoring was increased. Senior officials, including the Home Minister, Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Jail, visited the facility to assess the loss and coordinate recovery efforts. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah was also informed and has ordered strict steps to stop such incidents.
