Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi, Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietician and Chief Clinical Dietician at Apollo Hospitals, Bengaluru expressed deep concern to News18 on this issue and said that earlier research has revealed that ultra-processed food has adverse effects on digestion. Problems come but now it has been proved that the lining of the intestine is directly related to the brain and ultra processed food is directly harming the brain.

In this way the entire nutritional composition of that food changes. From this it can be easily guessed that eating that food will affect the body. Dr. Rohatgi told that earlier it was believed that flour, which is ultra processed, only harms the intestine, but now it has been proved that the intestine is directly connected to the brain and if there is a problem in the lining of the intestine So it will have an effect on the mind. He said that it has been seen in many studies that consumption of fast food, frozen items which are made after frying has led to dementia, Parkinson’s disease. Consuming ultra processed food on a regular basis leads to cognitive impairment. That is, the understanding or intellectual capacity starts decreasing in the person.

Many diseases from hidden salt

Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi says, “Many things are added to cakes, pastries, chocolates, dried fruits, berries, etc. to make them tasty. To preserve it, extra salt and sugar are added to it. Even chocolate which is sweet to eat, a lot of salt is added to it. Due to the high amount of sodium in these things, there is a direct effect on the capacity of the heart. We are giving all this to children from a very young age. Therefore, going forward, problems related to understanding may arise in them. Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi said that the cases of heart attack are increasing nowadays in young age, ultra-processed food is a major reason for this. Knowingly or unknowingly, these people have started consuming dry fruits, fast food, synthetic food, due to which deposition starts in the arteries i.e. bad cholesterol starts accumulating. The result of this comes in the form of a heart attack. We are spoiling our health in the matter of two minute noodles, pasta.

Liver starts getting bad

Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi told that ultra-processed food is kept for a long time. That’s why many harmful things are mixed in it. The sodium content in these things remains high, artificial color and food regulator are also added to preserve them for longer periods. These things are added more in non-vegetarian food. On these canned packets, the companies list the ingredients found in it. But most of the things are hidden in these lists. Some names are written in such a way that common people do not even know what these things are. Dr. Priyanka says that words like E-2, E-21 or E-26 are written in the form of color on the packaged box. These are harmful chemicals.

Similarly, INS 330 is written as acid regulator. It is also written as citric acid but it is very different from natural citric acid. Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi told that the maximum damage is caused to the liver by these added compounds. This can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a dangerous liver disease. It kills good bacteria by reaching the stomach, due to which the lining of the intestine is affected and it gives signals to the brain. Apart from the liver, these things also affect the kidney. Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi explained it in a very simple way and said that when we make maize bread, it is completely natural. But if we make popcorn from maize then it is processed but when it is made into corn flakes then it is ultra processed food. Similarly, wheat flour became a natural thing, but when semolina is made from it, it becomes processed and when flour is made from it, it becomes an ultra-processed food.

Almost all the food items that are packed in the market are ultra processed. Dr. Rohatgi told that nowadays added sugar and salt are sold in berries. Earlier all this was not available in India. But now this ultra processed food is available in plenty. Even if you keep some things in the freeze and later take them out and fry them, that too has become ultra processed. Chips, Namkeen, Coldrinks, Frozen Pizza or Frozen Foods, Beer, Bakery Items, Cider, Cheese, Biscuit, Ice Cream, Cake Mix, Jelly, Jam, Sherbet, Sauce, Preserve, Sweet, Soup, Wine, Preserved Vegetables, Canned Fruits, Food etc. are many ultra processed foods.
