Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir on Tuesday met Chinese President Xi Jinping as a member of the delegation of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The meeting took place a day after the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Sangathan (SCO), in which Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi also attended. Munir was part of the Pakistani team attending the SCO Summit at Tianjin and will join the grand parade of the Chinese Army to be held on Wednesday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Chinese Public Resistance War against the Japanese invasion.

During his first visit to China in July after taking over as Field Marshal, Munir met Vice President Han Zheng, but not President Xi Jinping, while his predecessor General Qamar Javed Bajwa met him. His visit took place after an event organized by US President Donald Trump for lunch. This was a rare step of an American leader who created concern in China in view of Pakistan-China’s evergreen relations. Xi Jinping met several other leaders who attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tianjin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, while Sharif was given time to meet the Chinese President in Beijing on Tuesday.

Munir was expected to go to see the parade with Sharif, in which the Chinese Army plans to demonstrate its most modern weapons of all types, including air, ground, electronic and missile systems. These arms systems were quite interesting for the Pakistani Army as more than 80 percent of its weapons come from China. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who was also part of the team, said that during the meeting, both sides held wide discussion on bilateral and regional cooperation.
