The Supreme Court has directed that all the stray dogs of Delhi-NCR be picked up within eight weeks and kept in the dedicated dog shelters to be established by the concerned authorities. In an important order, the court directed the municipal bodies and other agencies to work coordinated to create adequate shelter facilities within the stipulated time and ensure that dogs are removed from public places. The court further said that after keeping any stray dog in the shelter home, it should not be released back on the streets. The Supreme Court directed that stray dogs be kept in shelter homes and should not be released in roads, colonies or public places. He directed the Delhi government, MCD and NDMC to start raising stray dogs from all areas.

Last month, the Supreme Court took self -cognizance of a media report about the incidents of rabies due to bites of dog bite. It states that hundreds of dog bite incidents are coming out every day in the city and its outskirts, causing rabies to spread and eventually children and elderly are suffering from this terrible disease.

Earlier this month, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) announced that it would upgrade animal birth control centers to deal with the problem of stray dogs in the national capital and will conduct an anti -rabies awareness campaign. The MCD said in a statement that its centers operating in partnership with various non-governmental organizations will soon start installing microchips in dogs to record sterilization status and other important details, making it easier for monitoring and tracking. Apart from sterilization, regular health check -ups will also be done in these centers including blood tests.
