The Calcutta High Court has asked banks to file reports regarding compliance with the RBI circular regarding publishing necessary documents in three languages, including local, in their branches.
The court was told that State Bank of India (SBI) and some other banks have already filed reports regarding the use of English, Hindi and the respective local languages.
Bangla Pokkho Charitable Trust had filed a petition in the High Court requesting it to direct banks in West Bengal to follow the RBI circular and use local Bengali in all their branches.
A division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul directed that the matter be listed for hearing again in the first week of December. The bench said that the banks which have not yet filed their reports should file the reports before the next date.
Through a circular on July 1, 2014, RBI had directed public and private banks to publish documents related to customer service in English, Hindi and local languages.
