Burning stubble can now arrest, SC strict about pollution

The Supreme Court directed CAQM, CPCB and State Pollution Control Boards to present measures to prevent air pollution within three weeks before the start of the winter season, when the pollution levels increase. A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) BR Gavai and Vinod Chandran of Justice pulled up the states in pollution control boards and asked states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab to fill these posts within three months. The bench also gave similar instructions to the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). However, it gave six months to fill the posts of promotion in State Pollution Control Boards, CAQM and CPCB.

The CAQM is a statutory body constituted by the Center and its main objective is to manage and improve air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR) and its surrounding areas, including parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The bench was hearing a automatic cognizance petition related to filling the vacant posts in these authorities. The next hearing of the case will be held on 8 October. The court reprimanded the states for failing to fill the long -pending vacancies in pollution control boards and said that insufficient human resources in the extreme season of pollution further increase environmental crisis.
