The Border Security Force (BSF) failed a major smuggling attempt by recovering 27 kg of silver hidden in a car fuel tank near the Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. A smuggler has been arrested in this case. The seizure was done late on the night of 26 August at Hakimpur checkpost under the Tarali border post of the 143rd Battalion of BSF. Based on a special intelligence information, BSF personnel intensified the investigation in the area. At around 10:30 pm, the Seema Bal stopped a car for investigation on suspicion. According to officials, the driver could not give satisfactory reply during interrogation, which deepened the doubt. The company commander of the border post was informed and reached the spot immediately with additional personnel.

On a thorough search of the car, 20 packets were found inside the fuel tank. On opening them, BSF personnel found a total silver jewelery and silver curse weighing a total of 27.37 kg. He informed that the market price of seized silver has been estimated at Rs 27.36 lakh. The arrested person, who is a resident of Hakimpur, was immediately taken into custody with the goods carrying him with him. Initial inquiry revealed that he was trying to smuggle silver in Bangladesh at the behest of a Bangladeshi contractor. In return, he was promised to give financial compensation. Such activities are not new. Records suggest that he was also arrested by force in 2021 on charges of involvement in smuggling. Despite the previous action, it appears that he has maintained his relations with the gangs across the border.

The seized items include 17.4 kg of silver jewelery and 9.97 kg silver ingots. Officials said such smuggling is part of a large racket associated with illegal trade on the Indo-Bangladesh border, where silver and gold is often smuggled instead of restricted items.
