A Delhi court on Monday admitted a police closure report, recommending the cancellation of sexual harassment case filed by a ‘minor’ wrestler against former head of the wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The move has a formal end of the case that saw a major controversy, protest and upheaval in India’s wrestling community. The court headed by Additional Sessions Judge Gomti Manocha called the complainant to appear on May 26 before taking a decision on the closure report.
During an in-meeting proceedings last year, the complainant had already informed the previous judge that he was satisfied with the investigation of the Delhi Police and does not oppose the closure of the case. The Delhi Police filed a closure report on June 15, 2023, when the girl’s father made a shocking confession that the complaint was coined to take personal enmity with his daughter for alleged injustice. The police concluded that there was no “confirmed evidence” to support the allegations and recommended that the POCSO case be removed.
Although the POCSO case is now closed, Singh is still accused of sexual harassment in a separate case filed by six other women. Former BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, Singh has repeatedly denied all the allegations and claimed political inspiration behind the allegations. Under the POCSO Act, there is a provision of punishment of minimum three years imprisonment based on specific sections implemented in a case.
