For the first time, Chinese President Xi Jinping is not going to attend the upcoming BRICS summit to be held at Rio de Janeiro. Hong Kong -based South China Morning Post (SCMP) quoted officials as saying that Xi could not attend the summit next week due to ‘schedule related issues’. Prime Minister Li Kiang is expected to lead the Chinese delegation. The South China Morning Post has also indicated that such a step is being taken from Beijing due to Brazilian President Luiz Inecio Lula Da Silva to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for state dinner after the BRICS summit. According to the post, the Chinese side fears that Lula-Modi’s meeting may come into the limelight and Xi may be seen as a supporting actor.
Brazil disappointed with China’s move
Along with schedule issues, Chinese officials say another reason for Xi’s absence at the summit is that Lula and Xi have been first twice in the G20 summit twice in a year and during the state visit to Brasilia in November last year, and then during the China-Selak Forum in Beijing in May. Despite these speculations, Beijing has said that it supports Brazil’s BRICS chairmanship. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiyakun said that Beijing wants to “promote intensive cooperation” among its members.
Host Brazil of 17th BRICS Summit
Leaders of major emerging economies united to discuss global cooperation at the 17th BRICS Summit organized in Rio under the chairmanship of Brazil and President Lula. It is noteworthy that in October 2024, Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping held their first bilateral meeting during the BRICS summit in Russia following a bloody clash between the two sides in the Himalayas, which highlighted the stage’s role in promoting dialogues.
