The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the authorities concerned to take steps to provide effective legal representation to actress Celina Jaitley’s brother in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Celina’s brother was detained in UAE a year ago. The court gave this direction while seeking response from the Center on the actress’s petition, in which she has requested legal representation for her brother. The actress has claimed that her brother Major (retd) Vikrant Kumar Jaitley has been living in UAE since 2016.
He said he was employed at MATITI Group, which is involved in trading, consulting and risk management services. The petition claims that the actor’s brother has been “kidnapped and detained” in the UAE since September 6 last year. The petition said that even after more than a year, the Union Ministry of External Affairs has failed to obtain basic information about the actress’ brother, including his welfare and legal status.
Justice Sachin Dutta directed the government to file its reply by the next date of hearing (December 4). The lawyer representing the government argued during the hearing on Monday that Indian authorities in the UAE have provided consular access to the detainee. The actress’ lawyer then argued that despite several attempts, she was not able to contact her brother. Subsequently, the judge directed the authorities to ensure contact between the actress and her brother as well as between him and his wife.
