Bill passed in the assembly for decentralization of Bengaluru municipal body, Shivkumar told the reason for bringing amendments

Shivkumar clarified that the aim of this amendment is to ensure that the Greater Bengaluru Authority does not interfere in the functioning of municipal corporations. He said that some people had filed a PIL alleging that the authority had powers to control the corporations. Although the court did not accept the PIL, we have brought these amendments to prevent any kind of confusion in future.

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly today passed the Greater Bangalore Governance (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar introduced, which also has the Bengaluru Development Department. During the discussion, Shivkumar clarified that the aim of this amendment is to ensure that the Greater Bengaluru Authority does not interfere in the functioning of the municipal corporations. He said that some people had filed a PIL alleging that the authority had powers to control the corporations. Although the court did not accept the PIL, we have brought these amendments to prevent any kind of confusion in future.

Shivkumar further said that the mayors and corporation members will have full rights according to the constitution. He also resolved the concerns of the legislators about village inclusion and financial assistance and said that the law banned the transfer of money to maintain constitutional compliance. We will discuss which villages should be included in it and if the opposition disagrees then we are ready to withdraw the amendment. Shivkumar insisted that the government does not want to politicize the rule of Bengaluru. He said that we do not want to do politics on the future of Bangalore. The government will not intervene in financial freedom, tax collection, election or reservation. The 74th amendment has been fully protected.

He also responded to efforts to obstruct the discussion and told MLA Munratna that we will give you an opportunity to participate in the discussion. We have forgotten you because you are busy in check. The next step notification is expected to be released by 25 August after the Governor’s permission.
