Bihar: Jeevika Didis are playing an important role in grooming greenery, strengthening of rural economy and environmental protection

Jeevika Didi, who has become a pioneer of social change in Bihar, has created new thinking in every village by spreading awareness against evils like alcohol ban, dowry and child marriage, now has also become active in the campaign to save the environment. The water-life-Hariyali campaign launched by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the year 2019 stands as a mass movement in the entire state today. In making this campaign a success, Jeevika Didis have taken a historic initiative of environmental protection by planting crores of saplings under the Green Jeevika-Harit Bihar program.

Plant more than four million saplings

More than one crore forty lakhs associated with more than eleven lakh self -help groups of the state have planted more than four crore saplings so far. Didi’s nursery was introduced to meet the ever -increasing demand for plants. Today, through nurseries run by Jeevika Didis, the rural economy, along with environmental protection, are also doing leadership to increase the labor participation of women.

987 Didi’s nursery operated

With the cooperation of Jeevika, MNREGA and Forest and Environment Department, 987 Didi nurseries have been operated in the entire state so far. Of these, 677 nurseries are running with the partnership of Jeevika and MNREGA and 310 nurseries are running in collaboration with the forest department. It is worth noting that in 2019-20, their number was only 350, which has increased almost three times in five years.

Supply of millions of plants and income of crores

On an average 20 thousand saplings of various species are provided from Didi’s nursery. Every year between June and October, there is a large scale plantation of plants. At present, 68 lakh 80 thousand plants with a height of more than three feet and one crore 19 lakh 48 thousand plants with height less than three feet are available in the nurseries. In the financial year 2024-25, the sale of a total of 95.32 lakh saplings earned Rs 18.27 crore.

Target to plant 97 lakh saplings

In the financial year 2024-25, 82 lakh saplings were planted under the Green Jeevika-Harit Bihar campaign. At the same time, for the year 2025-26, Jeevika Didis have set a target of 97 lakh saplings. More than 23 lakh saplings have also been planted in the ongoing campaign since June. It is worth noting that with the efforts of Jeevika Didi, not only the environment and greenery of Bihar is increasing, but the continuous livelihood of rural women is also strengthening. With the water-life-Hariyali campaign, now women of Bihar have become the biggest partner of environmental protection.
