It may be recalled that TRAI had in March 2017 issued a new tariff order regarding the prices of TV channels. This was followed by the release of NTO 2.0 in January 2020. It said NTO 2.0 would give viewers the option and freedom to choose and pay only for the channels they want to watch.

Note that the monthly value of the channel offered in the book of broadcast networks was kept between Rs. 15-25, but in the new tariff order of TRAI, the minimum price has been fixed at Rs. In order to reduce the losses in such a situation, the networks are considering raising the prices of some popular channels by taking them out of the book. TV viewers will have to pay 35 to 50 per cent more to watch popular channels like Star Plus, Colors, Zee TV, Sony.
