Panjab University has got the green signal to conduct senate elections. The Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of PU has issued a notification regarding the dates of the Senate elections. This notification has been issued by Sarita Chauhan, Secretary, Vice-President’s Office. It said that the Vice President has approved the holding of Senate elections as per the schedule issued by you.
The tenure of the Senate at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh is five years. The previous Senate term ended on October 31, 2024. Thereafter, a new Senate election was to be held on November 1, 2024. However, instead of holding elections, the central government issued a notification to dissolve the Senate.

Let it be known that the Panjab University Chandigarh Bachao Morcha has been holding a permanent protest for the last 25 days demanding the announcement of the dates of the Senate elections. During this period, demonstrations were held in the university with various organizations from Punjab. During this period, a shutdown of the university was called for on 26 November and on the same day it was announced that if the date for the Senate elections was not announced, they would lay siege to all the district-level BJP offices in Punjab, including the Punjab BJP, on 3 December. Approval for the elections had already been received.
