Anita was sworn in as Foreign Minister on Tuesday.
Anita Anand of Indian origin has been made the new Foreign Minister of Canada. He took oath of office on Tuesday.
Voting for the general election was held in Canada on 28 April. In this, Liberal Party and Prime Minister Mark Carney won. In this election, 22 candidates of Indian origin won.
Apart from Anita, Mark Carney’s cabinet also consists of 3 Indians. Maninder Sindhu, who is involved in these, has been made the Minister of International Trade. Sindhu has previously been the Foreign Minister. He has been winning elections continuously since 2019.
Apart from these, Ruby Sahota and Randeep Singh Sarai have been made the Secretary of State.
Anita’s father was from Tamil Nadu and mother from Punjab
Anita’s father was Tamil Nadu while the mother was from Punjab. However, Anita was born and raised in Nova Scotia, a rural area of Canada.
He did Arts Graduation in Political Science from Queen’s University, Arts Graduation in Judgment from Oxford University, Law Graduation from Dalhousie University and Masters from Toronto University.
57 -year -old Anita is a lawyer by profession. He won the first parliamentary election from Oakville seat in Canada in 2019.
Has held the post of Defense Minister in the last term
Anita Anand has previously held the post of Defense Minister of Canada. He was made the Defense Minister in 2021 by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He was made the cabinet minister of public services and procurement in the same year.
Anita is the second woman to handle Canada’s Ministry of Defense. Earlier in 1990, Kim Campbell took this responsibility.
Anita has also been the Associate Dean of Toronto University. She married 1995 John Notton, a Canadian lawyer and business executive. They have 4 children.
Anita Anand has been an outspoken supporter of gender equality. She supports LGBTQIA+ rights. He also took initiative to fight sexual misconduct and bring cultural changes to Canadian Defense Forces.
Liberal Party returns to power in Canada
In Canadian power, the Liberal Party made a comeback by registering a historic victory under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney. The party won 167 seats. However this is 5 less than the 172 majority figure.
Although elections were to be officially held in Canada on October 2025, but Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new election last month saying that he needed a strong mandate to deal with Trump.
Justin Trudeau, who was Canadian Prime Minister since 2015, resigned from his post earlier this year, after which Mark Karney was elected the new Prime Minister.
