West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose has submitted a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the Murshidabad riots. In this, fundamentalism and extremism have been described as a major threat to West Bengal.
The Governor said that Bengal is a double threat, which is especially more in Murshidabad and Malda districts adjacent to Bangladesh as Hindu population here are minority. He has also described North Dinajpur as a sensitive district.
Violence took place on April 11-12 in Murshidabad to protest against the Waqf law. 3 people were killed in this, while 15 policemen were injured.
4 main suggestions for the Governor’s report ..
- Central Forces posts should be built in the border districts adjacent to Bangladesh.
- A commission should be set up to investigate the violence.
- The central government should consider ‘constitutional options’ so that law and order in the state remains.
- When the situation worsened, Article 356 (President’s rule) described as an alternative. However, he made it clear that it is not needed yet.
Governor’s claim- Murshidabad violence was pre-made The Bengal Governor claimed that the Murshidabad violence was already planned. The state government was already expecting danger as the violence erupted soon after the Waqf (Amendment) Act was released on 8 April and the state government shut down the internet on the same day.
He said that there was a huge shortage of coordination in maintaining law and order in the state. For this reason, the Center is recommended to find constitutional options to maintain law and order.
More than 100 FIR, 276 people arrested in violence case
The SIT of West Bengal Police arrested 16 people from Jharsuguda in Odisha on 21 April in the violence case. All of them were hiding by going to Jharsuguda.
Police arrested the mastermind of the violence, Ziaul Haq, including his two sons Safaul Haq and Bani Israel. They are accused of inciting violence.
West Bengal Police STF and SIT conducted a joint operation. Officials recovered CCTV footage and mobile tower records. They confirmed their presence on the crime scene.
Apart from this, the police arrested Kalu Nadar, Dildar, Inzamam -ul -Haq to Murarai and Jiaul Sheikh in the murder of Hargobindo Das and Chandan Das killed in violence. Police said that more than 100 FIRs related to Murshidabad violence have been registered. So far 276 people have been arrested in this.
During the violence on April 11-12, shops and houses were vandalized in cotton, Shamsherganj and Raghunathganj and many places were set on fire.
History of violence in Murshidabad Murshidabad district is bordering Bangladesh. The population of Muslims in the district is around 70%. It is the most Muslim population district in West Bengal. There has been violence in Murshidabad earlier.
Demonstrations were held against the Citizenship Amendment Act i.e. CAA in December 2019. Even then violence erupted in Murshidabad. On 14 December 2019, protesters targeted railway stations and buses. 5 trains were set on fire at Lalgola and Krishnapur stations and the tracks were broken in cotton.
Violence erupted in Shaktipur area of Murshidabad during Ram Navami in 2024. During this time more than 20 people were injured. Hinduist organizations alleged that stones were thrown from the roofs on the procession. After this there was a clash between the two sides.
Election in West Bengal next year About 30% of the population in West Bengal is Muslim. Their highest number are in Murshidabad, Malda and North Dinajpur. BJP started making a place in the state from 2019 onwards. The party may not form the government in the 2021 election, but won the 77 seats and came to the role of opposition party. He received 38% of the votes.
