Mehul Choksi fled the country in 2018.
Mehul Choksi, a fugitive diamond businessman and the main accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, is in the European country Belgium. Now Belgium has confirmed this to the news channel NDTV.
Belgian Foreign Ministry informed about Choksi’s presence in the country in the official statement. Also said- We understand the importance of the matter.
However, Belgium also said- we do not comment on personal matters. Nevertheless, the Foreign Department is constantly monitoring the events in this important matter. According to media reports, India has approached Belgium officials to start the extradition process of Choksi.
Mehul Choksi and another fugitive diamond businessman Nirav Modi is accused of scam of Rs 13,850 crore at PNB’s Brady House Branch in Mumbai. Earlier, Choksi had made an excuse not to return to India due to passport suspended.
The accused was living in Antiga-Barbuda before Belgium Even before leaving India in 2018, Choksi took citizenship of Antiga-Barbuda in 2017 itself. Choksi has been repeatedly refusing to appear in India, citing poor health. Sometimes he is produced through video conferencing. Many of his properties have also been seized in India.
In 2021, Choksi was arrested in Dominica. Then this picture of him was revealed from jail. Choksi accused him of assault in jail.
Dominica from Antigua reached 51 days in jail Choksi reached the neighboring country Dominica from Antiga in May 2021. He was arrested here. A CBI team reached Dominica to get him extradited, but before that he got relief from the British Queen’s Privy Council. He was later handed over to Antiga.
However, Mehul Choksi had to spend 51 days in Dominica jail. Here he had argued that he wants to go to Antiga and treat a neurologist there. A few days after reaching Antiga, the Dominica court also dismissed the case filed against Choksi.

Choksi received shelter from fake documents in Belgium According to media reports, Choksi submitted fake documents to get shelter in Belgium. He hid his Indian and Antigua’s citizenship and gave false information so that he could not be sent to India. The report also claimed that Mehul Choksi is now planning to go to Switzerland. He has made an excuse for treatment at the Cancer Hospital.
