Bangladesh: Islamic student organization won Dhaka University elections, signs of change before the national elections of 2026

The student branch of Bangladesh’s Islamic political party Jamaat-e-Islami has won a huge victory in the Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) elections. This result is considered far -reaching before the national elections to be held in February 2026. Prominent winners include Shadik Kayam and SM Farhad, who were elected vice -president and general secretary respectively, while Muhammad Mohiuddin Khan was elected Assistant General Secretary. According to the rules of DucSU, the vice -president takes over as the chairman. 471 candidates contested for a total of 28 posts, in which the ICS fielded a full panel.

This was the first DucsSU election under the interim government and the first election without the participation of the Bangladesh Student League (the student branch of the ruling Awami League), which was earlier banned. Reacting to the ICS victory, the exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen shared a video on Facebook, stating how some students of the branch appeared demanding the implementation of the hijab. This is the first time since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, when an Islamic student organization has won a majority in the university elections. The results were declared on Wednesday. 78% of the students voted. Jamaat-e-Islami’s student unit ICS’s Sadiq Kayem has been elected as Vice President and SM Farhad has been elected as General Secretary.

Accused of rigging

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) student organization caste student party (JCD) termed the results as fake. JCD vice -president candidate Mohammad Abidul Islam said that the calculation was rigged. The performance of the students Against Description (SAD) was weak in this election, which led the Awami League government of Sheikh Hasina last year. SAD also accused of rigging and fake calculation.
