In view of pollution, green fireworks were also used. Around 3 lakh pilgrims reached Sri Harmandir Sahib in the evening.

Giani Raghbir Singh, chief scribe of Sri Harmandir Sahib said that Bandi Chod Diwas is not only a symbol of light, but also a symbol of freedom and justice. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji released 52 kings imprisoned in Gwalior Fort and returned to Amritsar.

Devotees celebrated their return by lighting ghee lamps and setting off fireworks. Since then this day is celebrated every year as Bandi Chod Diwas.
