Geeta Gopinath, Indian-American economist Geeta Gopinath, the first sub-arrangement director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will resign from her post in this global organization and join Harvard University. Gopinath will re -involve the first Gregory and Enia Coffee Professor of Economics in the Department of Harvard Economics on 1 September.

Geeta Gopinath will join Harvard University again
Gopinath wrote on his X handle. After about 7 amazing years in the IMF, I have decided to return to my academic roots. On 1 September 2025, I will re -join @harvardecon as the first grace of economics and Enia Coffee Professor. I am really grateful to my time spent in @imfnews, first as Chief Economist and then as First Deputy Managing Director. I have the privilege of working closely with the talented and committed employees of the IMF, colleagues in management, executive boards and country officials.
She said that she is “really grateful” for her time spent in the IMF, where she was the first chief economist and then served as the first Deputy Managing Director. He described his time there as an opportunity to serve IMF members in a life of unprecedented challenges there. He said, now I am returning to my roots in the academic world, where I am ready to pursue the limits of research in international finance and macroeconomics to resolve global challenges and train the next generation of economists.

IMF on Geeta Gopinath’s decision
IMF Managing Director Christalina Georgree, has announced that Geeta Gopinath will leave the fund in late August and return to Harvard University, where she will be the first professor of economics of Gregory and Enia Coffee in the Department of Economics. Gopinath joined the fund as Chief Economist in January 2019 and was promoted to the post of first Deputy Managing Director in January 2022.
