The 74 -year -old leader left the post, citing health concerns after a three -year tenure as Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman. He resigned on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament and shocked political circles including the NDA.

In 2018, he was again appointed state president before Kummanam Rajasekharan. He was appointed the Governor of Mizoram on 25 October 2019. In 2021, he was made the Governor of Goa. He comes from Kerala. In such a situation, the BJP can make this bet in view of the next year’s election there.
