A second-year student of a private medical college in West Bengal was allegedly dragged and raped on the hospital premises. The incident is reminiscent of the RG Kar case of 2024, in which a junior doctor was raped and murdered. The victim, who hails from Jaleshwar in Odisha, is studying MBBS at a private medical college located near Shobhapur in Durgapur, West Bengal’s largest industrial hub, 170 km from the capital Kolkata. According to sources, the student had come out of the campus with a male friend at 8.30 pm on Friday night. A man allegedly dragged her to an isolated area behind the hospital near the gate of the complex and raped her.
As soon as information about the incident was received, the police reached the spot and started investigation. The victim was admitted to the hospital for medical examination. The police have also started interrogating the medical college employees and other people including her friend who had accompanied the woman.

‘No security on campus’
The medical student’s father told reporters that he was informed about the incident by his daughter’s friend. When I reached there, my daughter’s condition was critical and there was no response from the hospital administration, he alleged. He further told that his daughter had gone outside the campus to eat phuchka (golgappa) after a call from her boyfriend Wasif Ali. The victim’s father said, when she reached the campus gate, four-five people were present there. One of them raped her, snatched her mobile phone and demanded Rs 3,000 to return it. criticism of the state government
After the incident came to light, the West Bengal Doctors Front (WBDF) strongly condemned the gang rape of the medical student and called it another scary reminder that women are not safe even on campuses (in the state). Demanding justice for the girl, the WBDF said the Chief Justice of India should take cognizance of the case and order a judicial inquiry. West Bengal’s main opposition party BJP also launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led government, saying that law and order is repeatedly failing in the state.
