Jagdeep Dhankhar, who suddenly resigned from the post of Vice President late on Monday night, said in the Upper House that he had received a proposal demanding the removal of Justice Verma, which has more than 50 Rajya Sabha MPs signature. Since 152 Lok Sabha MPs had also proposed a similar proposal, they directed the General Secretary to take necessary steps to carry forward the impeachment process. According to the Constitution, it is necessary to follow the President’s order to remove a judge of the Supreme Court or the High Court, before which there should be a proposal for at least 100 Lok Sabha or 50 Rajya Sabha MPs. Whether the proposal is accepted or not, the Speaker or Chairman decides.

Why is Justice Verma in the headlines?

Justice Verma has been in the news since March 14, when the fire party and police reached their government residence after an incident. Subsequently, huge amount of cash was recovered there. At that time, Justice Verma was working in the Delhi High Court and was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court. A investigation panel appointed by the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of Punjab and Haryana High Court investigated the incident for 10 days. The panel interrogated 55 witnesses and inspected the fire place, allegedly started at around 11.35 pm on the night of 14 March. Its report concluded that Justice Verma and his family had secret or active control over the store room where cash was found, which proved that his misconduct was so serious that he should be removed from the post.
