In the historic meeting in Alaska, Russian President Vladimir Putin surprised everyone by saying that if Donald Trump had been the President of America in 2022, the war would never begin in Ukraine. He said this in his first face-to-face meeting with Trump after five years.
When Putin was asked about Trump’s claim in which he says that his presence could stop Russia from attacking Ukraine, Putin clearly said, “I can confirm this.” The summit between the two leaders took place in Alaska, which Putin described ‘a logical place in view of the common history of our countries’. Both sides called this conversation creative.

Putin emphasized that after going through a ‘extremely difficult period’, now ‘very direct direct contacts’ between Moscow and Washington have been established. He said, ‘It was necessary to improve the situation. We will always remember how our countries fought with shared enemies. This legacy will help us in future.
However, even after this high-level meeting, which lasted for about three hours, there was no concrete agreement on ending or stopping the ongoing war in Ukraine. This war, which is now in its fourth year, has become Europe’s deadliest struggle since 1945.
Putin said that Ukraine was the main subject of this meeting. He appreciated Trump’s ‘desire to understand the essence of struggle’. He emphasized that Russia’s ‘true interest’ is in establishing peace, but at the same time he said that for this ‘all the root causes should be abolished and all Russia’s concerns should be noted.’ Putin also agreed with Trump’s idea that Ukraine’s security should be ensured, and hoped that mutual understanding could bring peace in Ukraine.

Some big points have not been completely resolved, but we have progressed. ‘ He also said, “There is no agreement until there is an agreement.”
At the end of the summit, Putin told Trump, “Next time in Moscow.” To which Trump replied, ‘Oh, this is interesting. I will have to face some criticism on this, but I think it can happen. ‘ The meeting, even though not reached any major agreement, shows that the way to improve relations between the two countries and talk on complex issues such as Ukraine is open.
