UPSC i.e. Union Public Service Commission has appointed former Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar as the new chairman. He will continue in this post till October 2027. Its notification was issued on Tuesday, 14 May. Prior to this, Preity Sudan was the chairman of UPSC, whose term ended on 29 April.

Engineering from IIT, pHD from USA

Ajay Kumar did B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur. This was followed by Masters from Applied Economics and PHD in Business Administration from University of Minnesota, USA. He has also been a Fellow of the National Engineers Academy of India.

Important posts in Kerala government

Dr. Kumar started his administrative career at Keltron Company in Kerala. He was also the Collector of Palakkar district. He was the Principal Secretary in the IT department of the Government of Kerala. After retirement, he also joined several startups as a mentor. MGF-Kavach is the founder and has also raised funds of Rs 250 crore for this. Apart from this, he is also a visiting professor in IIT Kanpur.

Anuradha Prasad has been appointed as a member along with Ajay Kumar. The work of UPSC is to appoint a civil service officer like IAS, IPS, IFS. It consists of 10 members which the chairman leads. Currently, the post of 2 members in UPSC is vacant.

According to the notification, Ajay Kumar’s appointment has been approved by President Draupadi Murmu. The UPSC chairman persists for 6 years or 65 years of age.
