Prepare compost for button mushrooms

Farmers produce a large number of other mushrooms than button mushrooms. Significantly, many nutrients are found in mushrooms. By consuming mushrooms, the body gets many nutrients. This is the reason why button mushroom is more in demand than other mushrooms in the market. Button mushroom cultivation is done only on a special type of manure. Which is called compost. No special expensive machinery or equipment is required to prepare mushroom compost. Bhusa or kutti, calcium ammonium nitrate, wheat bran and gypsum are needed to make compost.

how to make compost

This compost is prepared in the shed itself. It takes about 20 to 25 days to prepare compost. Explaining the method of making compost, Dr. Rita said that first of all the straw is soaked in water for two days on a flat and clean floor. In this stage, there should be moisture in the straw as per the requirement and the straw should not be too wet. Mix all other ingredients except gypsum in this wet straw and moisten it a little more. During this, it is important to take care that water does not come out of it. Then make a square pile of straw. Let the pile of straw remain like this for two to three days. After four days start turning the heap. Also, keep in mind that the inner part of the pile should come out and the outer part should come inside. The straw has to be turned at an interval of three to four days. Then on the twelfth day gypsum is to be mixed. Scientist Dr. Rita said that the button mushroom seed has to be put in the prepared compost within the stipulated period.

Production can be done throughout the year

Dr. Rita Singh further informed that preparation of button mushroom was a big problem. But the team of Krishi Vigyan Kendra has taken initiative and prepared button mushroom here. Farmers of Katihar district will now get its benefit. The temperature has now started increasing in Bihar. That’s why this weather is not favorable. October to March is suitable for producing button mushrooms. On the other hand, if the environment is favorable then button mushroom can be produced throughout the year.
