External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in New York on Monday, an important step towards reconstruction of relations between the two countries. After the ongoing United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York, Jaishankar said, “The appointment of the High Commissioners is welcome as we are rebuilding the relationship. Further steps were discussed in this regard today. I am eager to welcome Foreign Minister Anand to India.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his counterpart of Canada Anita Anand here and termed the appointment of messengers in New Delhi and Ottawa as a ‘welcome’ step towards reconstruction of relations between the two countries. Jaishankar said in a post on Monday, “The meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand was good in New York this morning.” He said, “The appointment of High Commissioners for reconstruction of our relations is welcome.Today, further steps were discussed in this regard. I am eager to welcome Foreign Minister Anand in India. ”
India-Canada relationship returning to track!
In August, India announced the appointment of Dinesh Patnaik as the next High Commissioner of India in Canada. Patnaik last week presented his identity cards to Canadian Governor General Mary Simon and exchange of ideas on strengthening bilateral relations.
Patnaik is a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service Officer. India and Canada appointed messengers in each other’s capitals last month, indicating the efforts of the two countries to improve the deteriorating relations after the assassination of a Sikh separatist in 2023.

Last month, India and Canada appointed their ambassador to each other’s capitals, indicating their efforts to improve tension after the assassination of a Sikh separatist in 2023.In June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with his Canadian counterpart Mark Karney on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada.In the meeting, the two leaders agreed to take “creative” steps to restore stability in India-Canada relations, including early return to their ambassadors in each other’s capitals.After the diplomatic dispute over the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, relations between India and Canada reached the lowest level so far.In 2023, India-Canada relations broke out after the allegations of India being handed over by the then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the murder of Nijjar.In October last year, India recalled its High Commissioner and five other diplomats, when Ottawa tried to connect him with the Nijjar case.India also expelled a similar number of Canadian diplomats.However, the victory of Liberal Party leader Carney in the parliamentary elections in April helped to start the process of bringing the relationship back on track.
