In the second Test match played in Colombo, Bangladesh suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka and 78 runs. This defeat has caused a double shock to Bangladesh. One, the team lost this series 0-1 and after the match, captain Najmul Hussain Shanto resigned. The resignation of Shantio has created turmoil throughout Bangladesh cricket. In both innings of the first match of the series, Shanto had scored a century, he became the first captain of Bangladesh cricket’s history to do so.
At the press conference after the match, Najmul Hussain Shanto said that, I no longer want to work as a captain in the Test format. It is not personal. I have taken this decision for the team’s best. I think this will help the team.
He further said that, I think three captains are not prudent, I do not know what the board will think about it. I will support his decision. But this is my personal decision.
Bangladesh’s first innings came out to batting first after winning the toss, in response to which Sri Lanka put 458 runs on the board and put pressure on the guests. Sri Lanka had a lead of 211 runs after the first innings. For Sri Lanka, Pathum Nisanaka’s century scored a great innings of 158 runs, while Chandimal contributed 93 and Kusal Mendis contributed 84 runs. In the second innings, Bangladesh batsmen performed and disappointing.
