Following a violent incident at Srinagar International Airport, a senior Indian Army officer has been banned for five years from flying with SpiceJet. The airline, citing serious injuries to its four employees,, Lieutenant Colonel R.K. Singh is classified as a “uncontrolled passenger” under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) under the Civil Aviation requirements (CAR) guidelines.

How did the conflict begin?

The dispute occurred on 26 July 2025, when Lt. Colonel Singh, posted at the Army’s High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg, tried to climb SG-386 by SpiceJet to Delhi. Officials were allegedly carrying two cabin baggage worth 16 kg – which was more than doubled than the permissible 7 kg limit. When he was told about the fee of additional goods, he allegedly refused to do so and tried to forcibly enter the aerobridge, violating the protocol of the airport. CISF personnel withdrew him.

Increase in violence

The situation at the boarding gate took violent form. SpiceJet reported that the officer assaulted four employees. One employee’s spinal cord broke, while the other was severely hurt in the jaw. The airline said in its statement, “An employee fell unconscious and fell on the ground, but the officer kept kicking him.” CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral on social media.
