Twins of different sizes were growing in the womb

The scans revealed that the two babies, Darcy and Holly, were different sizes in the womb.

Thirty-year-old Sophie Small of Leominster, England, was told about a phenomenon called superfetation, in which one pregnancy is followed by another.

“I knew I was pregnant because I had a headache but I wasn’t sure I was so we kept trying,” said Sophie.

What is superfetation

A few cases of superfetation have been reported in the medical literature, but these cases mostly relate to women who undergo fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

When a woman becomes pregnant a second time during pregnancy, the condition is called superfetation. A few days after the onset of your first pregnancy or about 1 month later, when your egg comes in contact with sperm, it is fertilized. This leads to another new pregnancy. Twins are often born from superfetation. They are often born together or on the same day. In superfetation, a pregnant woman’s egg is fertilized and implants separately in the uterus.

This can happen due to these reasons
Such cases are considered somewhat unusual or rare, as it requires the simultaneous occurrence of three improbable events. First – the ovary has to release another egg or ovum, which usually does not happen. Second, fertilize that egg with a sperm cell. This is also impossible because in early pregnancy, mucus builds up in the cervical canal, forming a plug that blocks the passage of sperm. And third—implantation of a fertilized egg into the uterus, while an embryo is already implanted.

If all these unlikely events happen, two pregnancies can happen at the same time. But the gestational age of these fetuses in these wombs will be different. This means that both children will develop at different stages. These twins are very different from normal twins, which develop from two fertilized eggs and develop identically.

Sophie is already a mother of a child

Sophie already has a child, Oscar.

She says, “When I was giving birth to Darcy, I had a lot of problems. I was hospitalized eight times in seven weeks and was on a drip for 120 hours.

Sophie said she had no idea she was pregnant with two babies of different sizes.

There is such a difference in the age of the two girls

He added, “Even the doctors found it difficult to understand why I was so ill. I had my scan at 7 weeks and they said it was slightly different. I was going to have twins but one was bigger than the other. Something wasn’t right.

He said, “They found that the two babies had separate placentas so that they could nurse whenever they wanted. But they couldn’t figure out why one twin was bigger than the other.

Their daughters had a 35 percent difference in growth at birth and developed four weeks apart in pregnancy.

Sophie also said that she finds it strange when people hear about her unusual pregnancy.
