Nearly two years before the end of the tenure, Dhankhar resigned at a time when the events for the government in the Rajya Sabha were surprising, as he was assigned a notice of opposition -sponsored resolution to remove Justice Yashwant Verma and mentioned it in the House.

Dhankhar was associated with Congress for almost a decade

He advocated other issues related to backward classes including giving other backward class (OBC) status to the Jat community in Rajasthan. His amazing appointment as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019 brought him back to political headlines, but he did not stay away from the movement of politics and he was often confronted with the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Dhankhar lashed out at the opposition on many issues, from disruption in the Rajya Sabha to the passage of the bill without discussion.
He specially targeted the top lawyers who are also a Rajya Sabha member representing opposition parties, especially the Congress. A lawyer by profession, Dhankhar also targeted the judiciary, especially on the issue of separation of powers. He strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act, which tried to reverse the collegium system for appointment of judges of the Supreme Court and High Court.
In the presence of the then Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, he questioned the apex court to cancel the law passed almost unanimously by both houses. He also criticized the MPs, saying that when the law was canceled, there was no one emerged from the MPs. In 1990, Dhankhar, nominated by the Rajasthan High Court as a senior advocate, was mainly practiced in the Supreme Court and his litigation field included steel, coal, mining and international commercial arbitration.

Dhankar worked as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs during the tenure of Prime Minister Chandrashekhar. After the term ended as a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Dhankhar focused on his legal career and practiced as a lawyer in the Supreme Court. Declaling his name as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the post of Vice President, the BJP called him a farmer son.
In political circles, this step was seen with the aim of reaching out to the politically important Jat community, which participated in large numbers in the year -long farmers’ performance against agricultural reform measures launched in June 2020. After being elected Vice President, Dhankar met several groups of farmers in the national capital, Haryana and Rajasthan and urged them to move beyond agriculture to step into food processing and marketing sector so that their income would increase.
On one occasion, his words looked like a sharp criticism of the Modi government. Speaking at a function organized to commemorate the centenary year of ICAR-CIRCOT in Mumbai in December 2024, Dhankhar said, Agriculture Minister, I request you to request you to tell me what was promised to the farmer? Why was the promise not fulfilled? What should we do to fulfill the promise? He said, there was a movement last year, there has been a movement this year.
Dhankhar said, the wheel of time is moving, we are not doing anything. For the first time I have seen India changing. For the first time I feel that India’s development is not our dream, but our goal. India was never at such a height in the world. Dhankhar said while talking to the farmers, when this is happening, then why is my farmer upset and suffering? The farmer is helpless. Born on May 18, 1951 in Kithana village of Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Dhankhar studied scholarship at Sainik School in Chittorgarh.
