In 2024, IIT Kharagpur was ranked 5th in the Soutorn Asia category of QS World University.
The body of Mohammad Asif Qamar, a student of BTech Third Year, was found hanging from the noose on Sunday (May 4) at Madan Mohan Malaviya Hostel in IIT Kharagpur. The student belonged to the Civil Engineering Department and was a resident of Sitamarhi district of Bihar.
The college said that at around 3 pm, the security of a student was reported to the security. After this, police, doctors and administration were immediately called on the spot. The police broke the door of the room and took out the body. Initial investigation seems to be a case of suicide, further reasons are being further investigated.
This is the fourth suicide in IIT Kharagpur in the last one year. Earlier in April, January and June 2024, three students died. After this, the institute had taken initiative for students such as 24×7 counseling facility and QR code outside the room.
Amid the increasing incidents of suicide, a committee has now been formed which will report in three days why these incidents are happening and what steps should be taken to stop them.

Nepali student committed suicide in KIIT Bhubaneswar On Thursday, a Nepali student was found hanging in his room at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. The student has been identified as Prasa Saha (18 years). She was of B.Tech Science. Kiit did not comment on the death of the student.
Police Commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh said that the Nepali Embassy in Delhi has been informed about the death of the student. Prasad parents have also been informed about this. Postmortem of the administration will be done after his arrival. Initial investigation seems to be a suicide of the case.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arjuna Rana Deuba wrote on X that talks with the Government of India and Odisha are going on to know the truth of Press’s death. Earlier in February too, another Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal also committed suicide in KIIT.

On the complaint of the student’s cousin, the police arrested the accused Indian student. A case of abetment to suicide was registered against him. Apart from this, about 10 others were also arrested. These included three directors of the university.
To investigate the matter, the Government of Odisha constituted the High Level Fact Finding Committee with Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, Principal Secretary of Women and Child Development Department and Commissioner-Society of Higher Education Department.
