After suspending the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, India has stopped the water of Baglihar Dam on the Chenab river.
According to a report by the news agency PTI, Chenab’s water has been stopped from the Baglihar Dam in Ramban, Jammu. At the same time, planning is going on to stop the water of Jhelum river through Kishanganga Dam in Kashmir.
India has taken this decision after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people died and most were tourists.
The Run of the River Hydro power plant was built on Baglihar Dam. The flow of water from this dam was not yet being stopped. Electricity was being generated without stopping the flow of water.
The six rivers mentioned under the Indus Water Treaty include Chenab. It is the western river and according to the treaty, India can use this river water for hydro power generation.
What is Indus Water Treaty?
- The treaty took place in 1960 with the help of the World Bank between India and Pakistan.
- In this, rules for the use of water of the Indus River and its tributaries were fixed.
- Baglihar Dam has long been the cause of dispute between India and Pakistan.
- Pakistan had also complained to the first World Bank about this dam.
Pakistan has also raised legal and diplomatic objections about Kishanganga Dam many times, especially due to the impact on the Neelam River (tributary of Jhelum).
