Senior leaders including Sonia, Rahul, Kharge attended the meeting of the Congress Working Committee.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) met in Delhi on Friday. Other leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge participated in it. The party’s national president Kharge said- The central government has not made any clear strategy on the Pahalgam terror attack.
He said- The entire opposition is with the government. We have given this message to the whole world. Everyone will deal strictly against the obstacle in the unity and integrity of the country. Rahul Gandhi met the family of Shubham Dwivedi of Kanpur, the victim of the attack. He also demanded the government to give martyr status and respect to the deceased.
He said that the central government accepted the demand for caste census. For this, I congratulate Rahul Gandhi, who continuously raised this issue in the Lok Sabha and forced the government to take a decision on caste census.
He said that Rahul Gandhi has again proved that if we raise the issues of people honestly, then the government has to bow down. From the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill to the withdrawal of three black agricultural laws, the caste census has now joined the series of developments in which a stubborn government has once again bowed down.
Kharge doubted the intention of the central government
- The government accepted our year -old demand for caste census, but we are surprised by the time that was chosen for it. The language and spirit with which many things were said, have created many doubts in our mind. All the leaders of the party should be cautious to take the caste survey to the conclusion. The caste survey has been completed in Congress ruled Telangana and Karnataka. The findings are being included in preparing government schemes.
- During the AICC session in Gujarat, we passed a resolution on 9 April, in which our demand was repeated. We also demanded to remove the 50 percent limit on reservation. The removal of this limit will be done through a constitutional amendment.
- When I wrote a letter to the Prime Minister on 16 April 2023, the government was completely against it. Then how did his mind suddenly change? The government opposed our demand on every platform. It was called divisive and urban Naxal (thinking). Modi ji and RSS leaders criticized it in the state election campaign. If you fight, slogans like you were cut.
Caste census will be an X-ray of society
Kharge said- The entire process of 2011 caste survey started during the UPA 2 government ended on 31 March 2016. The government itself accepted this in response to a Rajya Sabha question in 2022. So was it not foolish to expect us to publish incomplete data in 2014?
He said that we believe that caste census will be X-ray of society. We will say that we are happy that they understood us, even if late.

The Union Cabinet approved the caste census. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had told that it will be done with the original census. Bihar Assembly elections are to be held in the country later this year. Caste census will be done for the first time after independence in the country.
There are speculations that caste census can be started in September. However, the census process will take a year to complete.
