For the first time after independence, there will be a caste census in the country. The central government announced this on 30 April. The opposition expressed happiness over the government’s decision. The Congress credited Rahul Gandhi for this.
Union Minister BJP leader Dharmendra Pradhan held a press conference on caste census on Thursday. On the question of abolishing 50% reservation limit, he said- Rahul Gandhi’s words should not be taken seriously. They do not even know the difference between survey and census.
He said- If this caste census was decided, some people are stunned. They say- the government belongs to them, but the system is ours, but the question is, in 1951, in whose hands the government and the system were in their hands? Why was this decision not taken then?
Pradhan said- this could not happen because the entire Congress including Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was the most staunch opponent of caste reservation. If Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi), Sardar Patel, had not been the Constituent Assembly, then the Congress would not allow reservation.
Here, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Thursday- till date the Central Government has not distributed enough funds for caste census. How can a survey be done without a fund? The government should also tell the time limit for caste census. The government should start the survey in 2-3 months.

- I wrote a letter on general census as well as caste census two years ago, then the central government did not agree, but now the government has decided to conduct caste census along with general census. This is a good thing and we will cooperate fully for this, but they (BJP) should not unnecessarily comment on Jawaharlal Nehru that they were against it.
- Jana Sangh (now BJP) and RSS have been against reservation since birth. Had the Congress been against caste census, would I write a letter two years ago or would I do many agitations for it? The BJP tries to create confusion in the minds of the people.
I do not want to go into politics. Whatever is good, I welcome it, whatever is bad, I oppose it, because after all the country is important, people are important. Since people wanted caste census, we agitated demanding it. All opposition parties pressurized and agitated across the country, and Rahul Gandhi led to the demand for caste census, we achieved it and we are happy.
Asaduddin Owaisi: Will the report of the census be available before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Caste census should be done so that it can be known which caste is developed and which caste is underdeveloped. You have stopped OBC reservation at just 27 percent, this is not enough.
Casey Venugopal: Eventually the central government agreed that caste census is the need of the country and the demand of the hour. For the last 3-4 years, Rahul Gandhi has been continuously demanding caste census and BJP has been attacking him. Our PM had said that there are only four castes in this country, then what is the need of caste survey? … We are very happy.
