AR Rahman fined two crores in the copyright case: The musician denied the allegations; Ponyin Selvan 2’s case is related to ‘Veera Raja Veera’

AR Rahman was fined by Delhi High Court by Rs 2 crore. He is accused of copying the song. The case is related to the song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s film ‘Ponyin Selvan 2’. According to the Delhi High Court, the song is a copy of ‘Shiva Stuti’ composed by the father and uncle of famous classical singers Ustad Fayajuddin and Wasifuddin Dagar. Also, the court has directed that this amount should be deposited in the Registrar Office of the Court.

According to Times Now, in the year 2023, a petition was filed by the Indian classical singer Fayaz Wasifuddin Dagar, a Padma Shri awarded in the Delhi High Court. He alleged that the song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ from the film ‘Ponanian Selvan 2’ is a copy of ‘Shiva Stuti’ composed by his father Nasir Fayajuddin Dagar and uncle Zaheeruddin Dagar.

Dagar in his petition A.K. R. Rahman had complained against the production company Madras Talkies and others, demanding a ban on the use of the song.

While hearing the case, Justice Pratibha M Singh said, ‘Veera Raja Veera’ is very similar to ‘Shiva Stuti’. Due to this, Justice has ordered Rahman and Madras Talkies to improve the credit credits. It has also said to honor the Dagar family. Not only this, the court has also instructed Rahman to pay a fine of Rs 2 crore and Rs 2 lakh to the Dagar family. The court said that the credit given to the Dagar family in the song will be updated on all OTTs.

AR Rahman has declared these allegations wrong. Also, the team of Madras Talkies has also described these allegations as baseless. He has argued that the song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ of ‘Ponyin Selvan 2’ is inspired by the 13th century composition of Narayan Pandit Acharya.
