The Supreme Court will hear the petitions of the Gujarat government and the culprits in the 2002 Godhra case case on 6 and 7 May. Justice J.K. The bench of Maheshwari and Justice Rajesh Bindal gave this information on Thursday.
The Supreme Court has directed a convict’s lawyer Sanjay Hegde to submit his arguments to the court by 3 May. The list of allegations against the convict in the argument, what decisions were given by the lower courts and whatever things they are saying, they have to give details of the evidence present in the court records.
The case is related to the incident of 27 February 2002, when the S-6 compartment of Sabarmati Express was set on fire at Godhra station in Gujarat. 59 people died in this accident. After this, riots erupted all over Gujarat.

Gujarat government challenged the High Court’s decision 31 people were convicted after about 9 years in the cases after the Godhra incident. In 2011, the SIT court sentenced 11 convicts to death and 20 to life imprisonment. Later in October 2017, the Gujarat High Court also converted the death sentence of 11 convicts to life imprisonment.
The Gujarat High Court has filed several appeals in the Supreme Court challenging this decision. The Gujarat government said in February 2023 that it would demand the death penalty for the 11 convicts whose sentence was converted into life imprisonment by the High Court.
More than one thousand people killed in Gujarat riots After the Godhra incident, more than a thousand people were killed in the Gujarat riots. Among them were 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus. A day after the Godhra incident, 69 people were killed by an uncontrollable mob at Gulberg Housing Society in Ahmedabad on February 28.
Among those who died were former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who lived in the same society. These riots worsened the situation in the state so much that the army had to be launched on the third day to control the situation.

In March 2002, he formed the Nanavati-Shah Commission to investigate the Godhra incident. Retired judge of the High Court KG Shah and Supreme Court retired judge GT Nanavati became its member.
The Commission introduced the first part of its report on September 2008. In this, the Godhra scandal was described as a well-planned conspiracy. Also, a clean chit was given to Narendra Modi, his ministers and senior officers.
Justice KG Shah died in 2009. After which retired judge Justice Akshay Mehta of Gujarat High Court became its member and then the name of the commission became Nanavati-Mehta Commission. The Commission introduced the second part of its report in December 2019. In this too, the matter said in the first part of the report was repeated.
