‘I was thrown up the mud after getting married with Javed’: Shabana Azmi said- was also accused of snatching the right of first wife, yet remained silent

A decision of Shabana Azmi, who is considered a feminist icon, was angry with her fans. The reason was his marriage to Javed Akhtar.

Javed was the husband of Honey Irani at that time. After nearly 13 years of marriage, in 1985 he divorced Honey and married Shabana.

Shabana, Javed and Honey- all three remained silent during that period. But people threw mud fiercely on Shabana. Now years later, Shabana has broken this silence.

In an interview to Filmfare, he said, ‘People’s anger was justified. I was considered as a feminist at that time. And I took a step that was against that thinking. Those who used to follow me, I felt that I set foot over the right of another woman for my happiness. And he was absolutely right to feel so.

At that time many people were expecting cleanliness from them. But Shabana chose that she kept quiet. He said, ‘If I started explaining the situation at that time, it would hurt more to those people who were involved in it. I realized that it is better to be silent. And that proved to be the right decision. The mud thrown dried up with time.

Today the situation is completely different. Shabana’s relationship with Honey Irani is very good. He said, ‘Today, the relationship between me and Honey is so healthy that people will not be able to believe. Its credit goes to me, Honey and Javed. We never thrown mud on each other. The same thing was saved by our relationship.

The three together decided that their personal life is not to be dragged into the media. Shabana said, ‘When people think wrong things about you, you feel like immediately that there is nothing like this. But we did not do this. And this was prudence. Because people cannot understand such situations.

This case was not limited to just three people. It also included children. Javed and Honey have two children- Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar. Shabana says, “Where children are involved, there is pain deeper. Such cases cannot be explained, nor can be felt. People are busy throwing mud. Nevertheless, the displeasure of the people in this matter was valid.

Javed Akhtar himself has also spoken openly about this relationship. In the series called ‘Angry Young Man’, he said, ‘If I have a gilt for anyone in the world, then it is honey. My and Honey’s marriage was 60 to 70 percent of my responsibility. If at that time I had as much understanding as it is today, then perhaps things do not deteriorate. ‘
