There are continuous demonstrations in the state over the dismissal of 25,000 teachers in West Bengal. Teachers are demanding justice to impeccable candidates.

What is the whole matter…

West Bengal SSC i.e. WBSSC appointed 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff between 2016 and 2020. Of these, about 18,000 candidates were appointed as an assistant teacher for 9th to 12th classes.

However, in 2021, many candidates questioned this recruitment process and also appealed to the court.

During this time it was revealed that WBSSC entrusted a company named M/S NISA without any open tender to maintain digital database and scan and evaluate OMR sheets. According to the Kolkata High Court, WBSSC could not submit any document about this company which could prove its qualification.

Apart from OMR sheets, recruitment was done without issuing merit list in this recruitment process, disturbances were made about rank and there was a disturbance about waiting list candidates. The CBI was handed over its investigation, M/s NISA officials and others associated with the commission were questioned and some were also arrested.

Finally, on 3 April 2024, the Kolkata High Court ruled to cancel the appointment of 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff. The court said that it is difficult to differentiate between tainted and immaculate candidates. In such a situation, the appointment of all will be canceled. However, on April 17, the Supreme Court said that as long as there are new appointments, old candidates can continue the job.
